  • What came first: Hellfrost or Game of Thrones?

So I did some research. It looks as if Hellfrost came out in 2008/2009 and game of thrones 2011. I'm just curious because the two settings sort of have some similar themes.

The Song of Ice and Fire, the book series Game of Thrones is based on, was published in 1996. But regardless of timelines, it's hardly surprising that two different properties have tackled the concept of apocalyptic winter. Humans feared long winters for as long we have existed. And Hellfrost is heavily inspired by Norse Mythology where the concept of the Fimbulwinter originates,

The inspirations of GoT were the War of Roses, Margaret of Anjou, the Massacre of Glencoe, the story of the House of York, the history of the Italian City states and their ruling Houses, the Mongols, Hadrians Wall and numerous Asian cultures mixed together.

On the other hand, the inspiration of Hellfrost is Britain at the time of the Anglo-Saxons and the Viking invasions, the Icelandic sagas, the Normans, and a whiff of Charlemagne, ending with the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Other sources and inspirations are mentioned in the Making of Hellfrost.

So, despite some similar themes, GoT is more late-medieval/Renaissance fantasy saga, while Hellfrost is based on the times from the Barbarian invasions, the Viking raids, and ending with the Norman invasion of Britain. Both are heavily influenced by the Norse mythology.
