  • Future Legion Ranks?

How should you assign ranks to your group if youre playing a future legion campaign? give one of them a leadership position, say corproal (probably let them choose the character who is their "leader"), and the rest either specialist or legionnaire?

What about ranking up? Should they get extras to fill in their squad/platoon etc as they climb the ranks? i don't plan to run a heavy military game, but I would use the ranks I think.

Putting the players into a special unit, especially a Special Exploratory Team, justifies them gaining the ranks and promotions that fit their abilities without giving them a lot of troops to command (i.e. Extras). Kind of like how the U.S. Army Special Forces, U.S. Navy Seals, and U.S. Marine Force Recon teams work.

This also gives the option to let the characters command Extras on those rare occasions when they're working with normal Legionaries, or have a unit assigned to them for a specific mission or period of time.
Example: My SR campaign is transitioning into the Minion Wars, and during the first conflicts of the Solstice the team was assigned a line platoon of Legionaries as backup. Basically 30 Extras with Commando stats to give the players a sense of being supported as best the situation allowed, and also give them options and flexibility (and folks that could die dramatically if needed). The highest ranking PC is Sgt 1st Class (Knowledge: Battle d6 and a couple of Leadership Edges; also Legendary), which rarely comes up but is something I keep track of.

I hope you find the above post useful. And not insulting, because I was trying to be helpful, not insulting; being a pedantic jerk, that isn't always clear.

SETs should probably use the Specialist chain of ranks: Spec 2nd, Spec 1st, Chief 2nd, Chief 1st, Master Chief, Top Chief, General.

I had most of the group start out Spec 2nd, and the designated leader gets a promotion to Spec 1st. Leadership appointment, at least initially, is done through Leadership Edges and/or Knowledge: Battle.

Now, as for Extras, I'd use their current rank to determine how large a team they might get assigned in the case of missions where such a team was necessary. I'd count the group themselves, though, against that. So a SET with 6-8 members doesn't have much space for Extras at the start (the Spec 1st only has command authority over 5-7 other people.

As they move up, though, yes, I'd let them have a pool of talent at Castle Refuge where they might be able to tap a few extra souls for the mission at hand.
