  • How many wounds can be done?

If a character takes massive damage, how many "wounds" are actually counted for purposes of soak?

Example: Able the Unlucky takes 50 points of damage. Let's assume this is 10 raises, or equal to 10 wounds. When Able soaks, does he start against 10 wounds (meaning he'd need to soak at least 7 wounds to avoid incapacitation) or does he only need to soak a single wound to avoid incapacitation (because characters can't take any more than 3 wounds)? Thanks in advance for the help. And the effort of answering all these questions is greatly appreciated!

If Able chose to Soak, he would be rolling against 10 wounds.

A Wild Card can still act with 3 wounds, but a 4th (or more) wound Incapacitates them. Nothing in the rules says a character can't take more than 3 wounds, just that they never have more than 3 wounds. As noted under Wounds in Damage Effects, "anything beyond that is just considered three wounds and Incapacitated (see below)."

So damage can go beyond that, it just doesn't apply any additional effect.

But a character Soaks damage before it has been applied, so they face the full value of the damage (10 wounds in the example above). In this way, a player can't have their character crash a plane with all their enemies on board because "we'll just take 4 wounds max and just need to Soak 1 of them to walk away from the wreckage."

Depending on the character, their Edges, and any special abilities, generally beyond 6 or more wounds, the better odds of survival lie in saving Bennies to reroll the Vigor roll after Incapacitation.

    Hope that helps!
