  • Deadlands Noir GM "title"

    Howdy all, where y'at?

I am a Deadlands Noir GM and enthusiast (I've GMed several games of Noir at conventions and with home groups over the past few years), and I'm just curious as to what other DL Noir GMs like to call themselves?

In Deadlands it's "The Marshal," and if this subject heading is official, a Noir GM can be called "The Shamus?"

Suits me fine, because that's the same title I "earned" when I pledged for the DL Noir Kickstarter.

What do other Noir GMs prefer to be called?

Looking forward to this and many other future topics under the Noir subject heading.

    Thanks.

I believe Shamus refers to what the PCs are called.

I figured since The Marshall was the one dealin' out "The Law" when running the game, Marshall could still work as a Noir title for GM. Otherwise, you could modernize it a bit, like "The G-Man", or "The Agent", or "John Law" or "I'm the one what bought this book, so I'm the one who's going to run it."

We talked at length about it when we were working on it. Eventually, we settled on the generic title, but if you're looking for a more atmospheric or setting-specific one, I'd probably suggest Commissioner.

Or, depending on the type of campaign you're running, you could go with The Don.

Something related to law enforcement or criminal prosecution would be a nice idea, but I can't think of any film noir jargon that's cool sounding and really fits the job. That's mostly because in that setting those words are usually derogatory terms. Maybe "Copper" or "Bull", or simply "The Law". Anybody knows of any slang word for a judge?

It'd be pretty funny to call them Private Dicks.

I kinda like "the Boss" or "the Don" not law enforcement but definitely has the noir vibe
Apologies if I am a little brusque, I'm not meaning to be rude.

                  Interesting ideas so far.

I could go with "the Old Man" per the Continental Op stories by Dashiell Hammett.

It suits this particular GM just fine, but may not suit other GMs who aren't my age or gender.

What would you call the GM in Hell on Earth and Lost Colony games? (Now that I read this thread I want a cooler title for those settings too, rather than just Marshal or GM!)
Please refrain from tweeting my posts or posting them on facebook. I dislike those services and would rather keep my contributions contained in this special interest forum. Thanks.

I would go with Governor. It may not have a cool ring to it but it fits the sci-fi, planetary ruler vibe.
I have way too much time but do not always edit myself properly. Please do not take offense.

HOE - Rad King (or Queen), Waste Lord, Teller, or Marshal (because it's the same setting, just advanced two centuries and one global nuclear war)
Lost Colony - Marshal to emphasize the Way Out West tag line; Governor isn't a bad alternate but a few individuals claim that title within the setting; Farsider to play with the solar system name
Noir - Clive, because no one messes with Clive without regretting it; crime lord names are interesting but I think they send the wrong signal to the players

                        Good luck!
I hope you find the above post useful. And not insulting, because I was trying to be helpful, not insulting; being a pedantic jerk, that isn't always clear.
