2 questions about The Last Parsec

#1 Postby wmarshal » Sun Aug 18, 2013 11:52 am

I was very enthused to hear official confirmation about The Last Parsec at the Pinnacle Seminar at GenCon. I have a couple of follow up questions that I didn't think to ask at the time.
1. What would you consider to be the primary "spark" that led you to want to do a "spiritual successor to Star Frontiers"?
2. Does the title with the setting have anything to do with "the last parsec problem" that astronomers are trying to answer?

(I did a Google on "The Last Parsec" and I got a bunch of hits where astronomers are trying to determine what happens in the last parsec before 2 super massive black holes collide. At least, that's how I'm understanding the problem.)

I unfortunately screwed up my GenCon schedule and missed the Pinnacle seminar. I would love some info on the Sci-fi Companion and especially this new setting. I've been running a Star Frontiers-like game at cons for a while now and I'm excited as hell that there's going to be a new sci-fi setting for Savage Worlds.

Oh yes, more details please! Not only about The Last Parsec but also anything else that may have been announced. Wish I had been there!

Gotta be a little sparse with the details just yet but we'll do a full blitz leading up to its Kickstarter. I can tell you there are four books, plus ship map posters, screen, and more coming all at once.

The inspiration? Working on the SciFi Companion most recently, and of course my own love of Star Frontiers back in the day. And we certainly don't want any confusion that this is in ANY way connected to SF--it's just of the same general spirit and tenor.

More in a few months...sorry for the wait...we just have an awful lot of other stuff in the pipeline too. :)

Four books and all these extras coming all at once? Thats fantastic news!

It sounds like much of the work is completed already if it's coming out all at once. I can't wait to get my hands on some new Savage Worlds Sci-Fi. I have run the Slipstream plot point campaign and many other Savage space games including Daring Tales of the Space Lanes, and I think it's awesome that you guys are coming up with a new space opera setting.

Will it include a plot point campaign?

@Savage Greek: Even better, EACH of the four setting books has its own Plot Point Campaign. :)

To clarify, while it will be coming out all at once, that doesn't mean it will be coming out soon. There is still a lot of work to be done.

Right now, the plan is for the SF Companion coming out first and then some time after that The Last Parsec stuff.

How does this relate to the Lost Colony relaunch that was rumored to add more planets, moons and space stations to the Banshee System to make a setting sort of like a space western

It doesn't. The Last Parsec is its own setting.

With the Sci Fi companion, Last Parsec and Lost Colony coming out in the same year or two will they have most of the same new situational rules for sci fi and space

And will any of the three have Mech rules

Mechs were mentioned as being part of the Sci-Fi Companion at the Pinnacle Seminar. Whether that means construction rules or just pre-built mechs, I don't know. That they mentioned that complex stuff needed playtesting makes me think it might be construction rules. Fingers crossed.

I have a crazy theory the unspoken reason Clint never finished his mech rules despite of my $1 bribe was he knew they were probably including something official in the sci fi companion or another product
