101 Bad Things that Happen When Big Bad Gets Greased

#1 Postby Cutter XXIII » Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:03 pm

(Inspired by this thread)

So, your group of intrepid heroes reaches the climactic encounter... and they take out the Big Bad with one extremely lucky, well-placed shot that not even your fistful of bennies can deflect. BAM!

What happens next to keep the tension from fizzling?

1. The mansion/castle/space station/secret base goes into self-destruct mode, starts sinking into a live volcano, tilting toward the black hole, etc. It's a Dramatic Task to escape in time!

2. The Big Bad was only a subordinate to greater dimensional entities. Social Combat ensues as the heroes try to convince them that the Big Bad needed to die, and they are worthy of life.

3. Dying was always part of the Big Bad's plan... to achieve some kind of immortality!

4. The Big Bad has a family, and they know when it's been killed. They arrive immediately. And angry.

5. The Big Bad's minions recognize the heroes as their new masters, an arrangement that has a large share of difficulties. First, they demand to know their next mission. Right now.

6. The Big Bad had an arrangement with a Bigger Bad that only lasted until its death. Now Bigger Bad is on the loose.

7. (For particularly evil GMs) The Big Bad was actually a Big Good in disguise. Time for some damage control.

8. The now-famous heroes become targets for every fame-seeker in the region.

9. The Big Bad's body disintegrates into millions of ravenous insects/snakes/weasels. Use the Chase rules to see if the heroes can get away from the horde before they're eaten.

10. The Big Bad's death destabilizes several nations and starts a war. Use the Mass Battle rules when the heroes are forced to join in.

11. The Big Bad is psychically linked to one of the PCs, and every wound he takes, they suffer too.

12. The Big Bad's small children and/or mother emerge and fall on the body, weeping. (My PCs hated it the one time I used this, accusing me of emotional blackmail.)

13. A Bigger Bad arrives to congratulate the PCs on having eliminated a rival, but of course now they know too much...

14. The Big Bad's body may have died, but his mind is alive and well. And inside one of the PCs.

Ah, the ever-popular Load Bearing Boss. (WARNING. TV Tropes link. You have been warned.)

My favorite: It's a clone!/Android!/Life Model Decoy!

15. The Big Bad swapped outfits with one of his mooks, whom you have just vaporised. See that mook sneaking away over there? That's your guy.

16. Big Bad would have time traveled in the near future, and played a major role in shaping the past (and the present). Remember those otherwordly invaders defeated by a mighty hero a thousand years ago? Yeah, you just killed him before he could jump back in time, and now the world belongs to Something Terrible...

This reminds me of one of the Evil Overlord Rules, something about keeping his 4 year old granddaughter on his knee so that when the Hero inevitably comes to kill him, the hero must first explain to the grandaughter why her dear grandpa needs to die, at which point she pulls the lever to the crocodile pit. After all it's important to spend time with your grandkids and kids love crocodiles.

Sorry, off topic. Back on topic:

17. The Big Bad's almost as bad Trusted Lieutenant arrives just in time to see you strike down "Da Boss" and attacks with an army of mooks
"Well, you do know what those who underestimate tigers always say right?"
"What?"
"They scream, 'Oh god help me I'm being mauled to death by a tiger.'"

18. "That's great, but there's just one problem. He already started the countdown. You've just killed the only person who knew the codes to shut down the doomsday device. I hope you're good at disarming nuclear missiles because we've got about two minutes before this one takes out the whole Eastern Seaboard!"

19. Two words: Diplomatic Immunity. And you've just killed him. Have fun at your trial.

Ooh I like that one! Slight variant:

20. You pull off his mask to reveal...the king's youngest son, known for being "a bit wild", but always getting away with it because he's daddy's favourite.

Nice ones!

21. A large demon or other similar creature had been trapped to the villain's body, or had been using it as a vessel. If the demon goes down too easily, we can proceed to #14

22. The villain's elite forces appear, realizing they are too late; Smart pc's might persuade them to leave or surrender, but if they don't act first, the elites attack with force!

23. A huge 'pet' of the villain senses it's master's death, rips himself out of chains and charges towards the villain's dying spot.

24. The villain's general or advisor appears, sees the villain dead, saying 'So, he's dead. It's time to start a new chapter. Now, would you please leave, I have matters to attend to.' There's no evidence of this person actually being evil and he isn't aggressive towards the heroes. There's a considerable force now present, so combat is a bad option, and the heroes have no idea what this person is up to. And when/after heroes are escorted out, another former lieutenant of the villain will try to eliminate the heroes...

25. The villain's last words talk about the plague he had kept at bay with strong medicines... and the heroes realize they are covered with the villain's blood. People start running towards the heroes rejoicing the villain's death...

26. Heroes go home... Alternate universe version of the Big Baddie shows up at their door step. He's a good guy and he's running away from bad-guy-alternate-universe versions of the heroes.

I'm totally stealing this as a contingency plan. :)

27. After making sure that he cannot come back to life by any means, somebody realizes that the Big Bad was actually an evil twin. The PCs just offed the Good Twin. Whoops. they should have listened when he claimed to have no idea what they were talking about, Talk anout wrong place, wrong time. Wrong guy! How enbarassing!

28. Good one guys, now you are unemployed and you need to find a job like everybody else,
Just about every kid today wants to be Batman, Spiderman, or Superman. Maybe if we were better parents they would not want to become orphans.

29) The villain goes down. But keeps crawling away. He/She/It screams every time the heroes "finish" him/her/it. Turns out, the Big Bad is already immortal. What now? Keep "killing" he/she/it? Imprisonment? The Big Bad will just escape and come after the heroes in new and different ways. Or maybe get bored.

30) Big Bad had a secret affair with an ally of the PCs, who turns on the party to avenge her lost love.

31) Big Bad was the lynchpin of an alliance of multiple factions, who now turn on one another in the resulting power vacuum. The PCs will have to fight their way out of a crossfire between the competing Minion Teams. The minions have no more compunctions about collateral damage, throwing grenades into melee, etc.- after all, their squadmates are also potential rivals for Big Bad II.
