Humor Campaign: Time Captains

#1 Postby The Vulture » Mon Aug 24, 2009 8:53 pm

Developed using characters and concepts from my brother, our very own SlasherEpoch.

In the year 1896, Thomas Edison invented a fully functional time machine. As a matter of fact, it was the only thing he actually invented, but never bothered to patent. All of his 1,093 other patents were stolen directly from other people in his voyages through time. Edison had a sordid obsession with having patents in his name, but little inclination to do actual work.

After his death, the plans for Edison's time machine lay in a vault at General Electric, doing little more than gathering dust. Finally, in 2015, GE met with severe financial difficulties. Desperate, the executives did the only thing they could think of: they pulled out Edison's plans and began selling time machines at Walmart.

The result was as catastrophic as you might imagine.

Finally, Congress banned time machines in the general public shortly before the entire legislative body was killed by samurais riding pterodactyls. Now, with the above two events being the only two things anyone knows for sure what happened, someone has to attempt to correct the flow of time.

Characters are a group of people in the new city of Temporalville, home of more PhDs than anywhere else on earth. Temporalville was built over a time nexus that offers it some degree of protection from the ravages of screwed-up history. Over the course of the campaign, they will need to make various journeys through time and attempt to correct damage or what they think is damage. this campaign is being played mostly for laughs, so the missions will be things like stopping an art student from bringing dinosaurs to caveman times to justify his drawings of cavemen fighting dinosaurs.

Characters can be from any point in history up to 2015 and can use equipment from any point thereof, but need to be able to communicate or work in a team in some other way (ie, no dinosaurs).

I say make it Nikola Tesla instead of Edison, just cuz it makes me think of that horrible magician movie (not to say your idea is horrible or anything, just that the movie was).

No, Edison seems more appropriate, as he had corporate resources while Tesla was more of a traditional loner mad scientist. Plus by most accounts Edison had a certain amount of jerkarse attitude (particularly the way he tried to discredit Tesla's idea of using alternating current as opposed to direct current).

Yeah, I'm with Duck and Vulture here (of course I am, it's my setting ;)). In the Time Captain universe, Tesla is much as he was in ours: an eccentric genius. Edison is more of a jerk, stealing stuff from people all over time.

Aye. Inventing the electric chair to discredit his competitor's invention was pretty twisted.

And I should add that the setting idea itself sounds really interesting. Even beyond a humorous take. If you work out more details please post them.

Oh, I didn't know if the whole stealing ideas part was important or not.

Yeah, could totally see Edison doing that.

Edison goes on to assemble other Jerks of History (including Isaac Newton, Aaron Burr, W.S. Gilbert, and others) and forms a time-traveling supervillain team composed mainly of people with bad attitudes.

SlaserEpoch or I will post more details soon enough, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

From the looks of this, I'd say that you could easily adapt stories from Peabody's Improbable History.

Quick question. Are languages going to be an issue, or will it be assumed that characters will have universal translators?

So, any further development on this?
