Transhuman races

#1 Postby Mr. Freak » Mon Oct 27, 2008 9:30 am

I was thinking of doing a Transhuman game and came up with the following races. I'd be interested in your thoughts or comments about them.

Transhuman races

Purist
You are a pure human, a throw back to an older time, for what ever reason your parents refused genetic screening, adaptation, or alteration. You are the base line that all other races come from.

Racial Abilities:
You receive two extra edges in character creation, but they can not be spent on anything that would alter your perfect form in any way. No cybernetics, bionics, or nanotech allowed.

Human
Your parents opted for genetic correction and enhancement. While they did not go for any of the more outlandish modifications you are a picture of perfect health, or at least until you start taking hindrances.

Racial Abilities:
Free Edge

Arcane Background (Super Powers: Advanced Genetics)
You have 10 points from which you can buy Gifted, Super Attributes, Super Skills, Super Edges, Lair, or Vehicles.

Cyborg
You have had your meat brain scanned and downloaded into a new body and then destroyed. You have had meat parts replaced or integrated with metal and wires. You can look like an ordinary human, a chromed up monster, or something in between but you must decide at character creation.

Racial Abilities:
Construct – You have the monstrous edge Construct, as such you gain a +2 to recover from being shaken and as long as your brain stays intact you can never die as it can be scanned and uploaded to a new body.

Arcane Background (Super Powers :Cybernetics)
You have 10 power points from which you can buy Super Powers from the Necessary Evil book. Your powers must have the cybernetic trapping, they are made of metal, circuits, and wires and are always built into arms, legs, torso, or head.

Bioborg
You have had your meat brain scanned and downloaded into a new body and then destroyed. Your new body was grown in a vat and is the pinnacle of biological perfection. It can be base line human, humanoid animal, or some monstrous humanoid form.

Racial Abilities:
Construct – You have the monstrous edge Construct, as such you gain a +2 to recover from being shaken and as long as your brain stays intact you can never die as it can be scanned and uploaded to a new body.

Arcane Background (Super Powers: Bionics) – You have 10 power points from which you can buy Super Powers from the Necessary Evil book. Your powers must have a biological trapping, they are all made of flesh, bone, muscle and blood, and are always built into arms, legs, torso, or head.

Nanoborg
You have had your meat brain scanned and downloaded into a new body and then destroyed. Your new body is made of billions of nano machines each working in concert to perform incredible acts. Your form is that of a human do to the limits of your human brain. Unfortunately the human brain can not work cohesively in another form with out extensive training and specialized gear. (i.e. the Alternate Form power).

Racial Abilities:
Construct
You have the monstrous edge Construct, as such you gain a +2 to recover from being shaken and as long as your brain stays intact you can never die as it can be scanned and uploaded to a new body.

Arcane Background (Super Powers: Nano-Tech) – You have 10 power points from which you can buy Super Powers from the Necessary Evil book. Your powers must have a nano-tech trapping, they are all made of nano-machines and can assume any shape.

Uplifted Animal

You were once a dumb beast until the humans enhanced your mental capabilities. You now have the ability to think and reason, but are still only have the animal form. Unfortunately this does not confer the ability to talk or human vocal cords.

You should choose an animal that you wish to play, with GM’s permission and the GM should determine you’re starting attributes, except for Smarts which is always +1 die type.

In addition Uplifted Animals can take the Arcane Background (Super Powers) edge.

Racial Abilities:
Animal
You look like a regular animal and if you play it up could possibly fool most people. In addition you gain the abilities of that animal, which should be worked out with the GM. For example a house cat should have be small, have dark vision, and natural attack d4+str.

Uplifted
You gain a +1 die type for your animal’s intelligence. In addition your characters intelligence is considered normal and not animal.

My concern is that players who choose to play a purist or uplifted animal will be at a disadvantage when compered to others. Since they don't get NE powers. If your group of players can pull off having characters of different ranks without causing the the lower ranks to feel left out or second fiddle then it should be OK. Or if they all make characters from the same 'race'.

NE powers will probably unbalance the setting but playing a human could be a challenge for the right player.

How about adding the Outsider Hinderance for non-augmented characters?

While we're on the topic, how about A.I. characters?
