[Shark Bytes] Modern & Horror issue preparation

#1 Postby Lord Inar » Thu Sep 04, 2008 10:35 am

Hello all!

It looks like it’s that time again to get started on the next issue of Shark Bytes!

As you know from reading the current issue, our next issue will be:

Modern & Horror!
Tour of Darkness!
ETU/Pinebox!
Ravaged Earth!

I’m calling out those settings to generate interest, but of course anything’s game. I'll be filling in this table as I get submissions so you know what's coming and where we need contributions.

Several things to note.
1) I’d like something for every one of these columns, but that might not be possible. We won’t hold up the issue for just one column!
2) We can always find room for more than one entry in a given column, so if you see that there’s already an article, don’t let that stop you from submitting!

Oh, a deadline for submission? You want a deadline? I would like to have them by September 30 if possible to try to get this out before Halloween. That might not happen of course (I know it is a short turn-around, but if everyone is on the ball, we can do it.)

I'd like to offer something to this issue. Let me know if these sound right.

Cyberware: An article that attempts to expand the rules for cyberware, providing a long list of options and some grounded rules for installing cybernetics and dealing with humanity loss.

Obeah: Similar to voodoo, obeah is a dark art practiced in the Caribbean all the way from Trinidad to Jamaica. Unlike voodoo, it is not as flamboyant or well-known. Obeah is ritualistic, and so uses the rules for rituals created by Clint in an earlier Shark Bytes. It is useful for very low-magic campaigns that still have a sprinkle of the supernatural. Though I originally began working on it for Pirates of the Spanish Main, it is just as applicable to modern/horror.

I also have a good article on Vehicle Mods (V-Mods) but seems it was covered some time ago in Shark Bytes.

I might have seen this already from you. I think it's good. It might be better for the upscoming SF issue, but that's a little ways off. It depends upon your spin, I think.

This sounds good

Unless it's exactly the same, I don't see any reason not to revisit a topic.

I'd like to contribute an article on Modern/Horror monsters, if that's cool.

Please let me know,

Hallo. I've a couple of questions related to "Alternative Arcane Styles
Fine tuning the Savage Worlds Arcane Powers System for any setting, by Simon Carryer", appeared in S.B.#3 pag. 38.
Is it possible to "chat" with the Autor? Is he in the forum? Some ideas are quite good, and i like "Magic from an outside source" chapter very much, 'cause it's fantastic for druids and alike, in my fantasy campaign (it'as a nice different AB, Savage Worlds really needs something like this).
I have some dubs about the mechanic of the new AB, and i think that it's a little unbalanced (it's difficult to use the skill - too high target number, and the the spirit has to make his magic roll, so the miss % is very high).

PS: do you think people that the edges & powers at pages 17-19 of S.B.v3iss1 are equilibrated, compared with the original ones in the main book? I want to introduce'em, but I'm worried to keep things balanced. There is some type of "supervision" of the Pinnacle Crew, in the S.B. Fanzine ???

I've got some ideas for The Edge of Reason based on certain horror tropes. I'm also working on an article on the Winchester Mystery House in Deadlands: Reloaded (which will require tweaking a couple of dates). Plus I'll crank out a profile for a Chi'ang Shich (a form of Chinese undead).

I'm not sure if he's around. Why don't you put up a post specifically asking your question and you might find him or someone who will get you in touch with him.

We do a little bit of vetting for equality and balance, but not too much. A key thing to remember is that is FAN-based, so nothing from here will ever be official. That being said, however, we try to make it so players can pick up the material and work with it right away.

If you go through the boards, you'll see that creating new ABs and making sure they are balanced is probably one of the trickiest design feats in SW. Especially in this area, there is also a lot of variability in what constitutes "balanced"

I'd say one of your best bets is to ask a question on the boards if people have used it and whether they like it, changed it etc.

Send me a critter description, and I'll whip up a pi'cher of it. I'm good for two for this issue.

Okay, I'll whip up a short adventure or two for the "I love an adventure" section. Possibly something for Tour of Darkness, or maybe something a little more generic modern, I don't know yet.

Lord Inar, did you get the horror tropes contributions for Edge of Reason?

Sorry about that I thought I had updated the list, but I obviously didn't.

Just FYI, 12 to Midnight will be sending in four Midnight Tales by the end of this week. I may also throw in a little something extra.

Would you be interested in a write up of a savaged chupacabra?

Not to be a buzzkill, but isn't that in Deadlands Reloaded?
