Another reason why Shane is the best!

I was reading the Shooting Blind tonight and was so pleased to see Shane write:

Further, I don't want to see complicated rules, complex variations on the systems, pornography, racism, etc--all things that currently exist under the D20 OGL.

I want Savage Worlds to stay clean, both figuratively and literally. The only way to do that is to maintain tight control over all "official" material.

So sorry, it's my sandbox. I'm honored and thrilled if others want to play in it, and the stuff they make there is often FAR better than my own, but at the end of the day it's my sandbox. No communal playground equipment here.

And if someone poos in it, I know who did it.

I know one big reason Shane's popular, and a great guy. It's the Virginia connection. Virginia is the best place to live, hands down. :lol:

Well, anothr reason Shane is great is because he has said no to the D20 monster. I'm really happy he has chosen to stick to his guns on this one. If it's not broken convert it. Get's really old fast. Like a lot of other companies seem to have been brought to heil. I've been a fan of PEG for a while. I'm really happy to hear he's not turning his back on his fans or the potential of his system. D20 is not the answer to everything. My hat's off to you Shane.

It is interesting. I think that the d20 license and the open gaming license has been good for the industry. There is lots of product out there. But, as a friend said when I sent him Shane's comments - a lot of it is crap. But, a lot is good stuff.

BUT, for me, D&D v.3 and d20 were a bust. Since it came out a couple years ago, I have played it twice - once in a game run by a friend at GenCon last year and one night a year and 1/2 ago.

On the other hand, Savage Worlds re-energized my gaming. Our small group is now scheduling a game every other week and I am making sure it happens. Part of it is what Shane said to someone else at GenCon: Pointing at me, he said, "This is exactly the demographic that Savage Worlds is aimed at!" I can set up and run it without a lot of preparation - the rules don't get in the way of the story. And, the rules are flexible enough to do what I want to do.

And, I praise Shane for his stance. For some, the OGL is great. But, it is his game and I like what he is doing with it.

In short, it is great for me. And, I am finally running the demo at my sort of local game store on the 27th to spread the gospel.

d20 is rapidly becoming the Microsoft of the gaming world. I can't say I support conversions of existing engines to it, because the reason said engines were created in the first place was to allow them a flexibility and focus not covered by existing rules.

Plus, DnD 3.5??? What the hell, really? Don't get me wrong here--I owe a lot to DnD and WotC in general, especially for creating the underappreciated Alternity liscence--but $30 f@#%in' dollars for maybe a few pages of supplementary material to make the game run smoother!?!? Class balancing, my ass! The Sorcerer still gets the shaft, Monks are way too much, and Fighters have been toned down. I'd assume stick with 3rd edition where I shell out $20 per core book, and then get screwed over by paying the same amount for less material on a supplement.

Or, I can play Savage Worlds. One-time investment of $30, plus another $30 gets me a whole campaign.

I guess I end this rant with "Thank you, Shane!!!!!"

BTW, this is off-topic, but I find that 3rd edition class balancing seems wildly dependent on the house rules and interpretations of each group. Ours finds Sorcerer very useful, especially as a 'utility' spell-caster, even more so since we tend to play cash poor games where a wizard would need a lot of funds to remain competitive...

Of course, we've just seen the abuse of multi-classing 1 level of ranger, since all of the ranger's major goodies come from the first level, except for spellcasting and more favored enemies.
Still looking for a good steak.

Well, speaking from a complete newbie point-of-view, as someone who has gamed for over 25yrs, most of it non-D&D (and only ever AD&D before that), I also think Shane's attitude deserves praise.

Of course, it means that the Savage Worlds product line will probably only ever be small, but that's no bad thing. Look at Shadowrun; if you bought everything you possible could (and I know people who have), the overall cost is truly staggering. And that's only if you count SR3!

While I'd love to see some more ideas on running particular types of campaigns (I'm really interested in running an "Indiana Jones meets The Shadow" type campaign), I'm happy for Shane to maintain his grip. All things considered, a consistent vision for the game is more important than a plethora of product.

Savage Worlds is perfectly suited for this type of campaign "as written". All I did was pick up a copy of West End Game's Masterbook Supplement: Indiana Jones and GURPS Cliffhangers for source material and went from there ;)

Around my neck of the woods, we talk about games in terms of Majesty (all StrongBad jokes aside). Some game worlds have it, some don't. A majestic game world is one where you'd want to live, someplace where the feel of the universe, it's details and motion, strike a cord deep within you. You wouldn't need to be an adventuring PC, or even a figure of significance; you'd just feel comfortable being a regular-old person there.

Obviously, very few games strike this cord. I have one - Pendragon. I adore the feel of the universe, the social order, the feeling of trimuph and adversity. Zach, my beloved and GM, feels this way about Call of Cthulhu.

The whole point I'm trying to make is, essentially, too many cooks spoil the broth. I think Deadlands is such a dynamic and in-depth world because one man nurtured it, coaxed it, pruned it... It's the culmination of a vision given proper care and attention, remaining true to one artistic expression. It is a whole.

Another point about multiclassing, 1 level of bard. Most of the bardic powers are based solely on their performance skill.
