[DLR] Kang

#1 Postby ValhallaGH » Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:07 am

I was getting ready to use the Rail Barron (my players are planning to kill him and usurp his empire - inspired by the Ranger's girlfriend, Red Petals Su) when I noticed some oddities in his stat block.

His Fighting is listed as d12, with the Master (Fighting) edge, Improved Block, and a 10 Parry. Parry should be 11 for Fighting d12+2.
Does he simply not have Professional and Expert for Fighting, or is this a bit of errata?

Also, his Improved Arcane Resistance makes it really hard for him to use his martial arts powers (most target himself). His black magic is much easier since it rarely affects him.
Is there some edge or special ability he should have to ignore his own Arcane Resistance, or should his chi skills go up, or is that meant to be one of the things that makes him beatable?

Thanks for the help!

Fighting should be d12+2 and Parry 11. But we don't ever list Requirements under Edges; note, for example, that he has Improved Block but Block is not listed. It's assumed.

Also, his Improved Arcane Resistance makes it really hard for him to use his martial arts powers (most target himself). His black magic is much easier since it rarely affects him.

As written, yes, that's how it works.

I can't comment on why it was done that way, though. Before my time. Were I using him, I'd either drop Improved Arcane Resistance or give him a Reckoner-granted loophole to ignore it for his chi powers.

Thanks for the response.

Oh, I was already planning to do the latter. I was just looking for a counter-argument.

I think granite is over-priced and over-hyped. If you're not a careless boob who'll hammer away at it, I'd go for soapstone. Then your whole kitchen is a trivet!

That is the best counter-argument I ever heard.

This might get a little off-topic but I just checked my SWD:EE and under Arcane Resistance it technically doesn't say the caster would get the penalty to his rolls to activate the powers. It only states that he gets Armor against Magical damage, a bonus against opposed powers and that even friendly powers must subtract the penalty from their rolls.

So in my (absolutely-not-native-in-English) interpretation the character with Arcane Resistance won't get any penalty to, say, Healing or Armor Powers for himself since they aren't neither Magical Damage nor Opposed Rolls. A friendly mage would get the penalty to some friendly use of Drain Power Points or Puppet Powers, for they are Opposed Rolls.

And yes, I can use Puppet in a friendly way. Like... errr... If you've taken a few too many and try to hit on that girl who's nothing but trouble! You might not realize it at the moment, but you'll thank me in the morning.

Now forward unto not as Off-Topic:

I went searching to see if that question had ever been answered by Clint, and sure enough I was curious about it back in 2007.

So in this case, it does work like Clint's option 2... as written.

Oh, it's been a wild ride.
He shot her down and saved Hellstrome. She hunted him down. She fell in love (thanks Love Interest adventure card). She infiltrated the posse in disguise. The posse started the War of the Triads. She revealed herself and shared her ambition. The Ranger agreed with the plan, and I realized that they were about to have a chance to fight Kang. So, I prepped him and noticed the details that started this topic.
