Attributes

#1 Postby Theta » Wed Feb 29, 2012 1:18 am

What is the actual real life comparison for the die types of attributes and skills? How strong is d12 strength? How far can you stretch with d8+2 agility? How ridiculously deathproof is a man with d12+2 vigor? What level of fighter has d12 fighting? How blessed is a d12 faith priest?

What is the comparison for these attributes?

Strong enough to carry 240 lbs. of gear and still act (though at -3).

I'm really not sure how to "answer" that as "stretching distance" isn't really something I consider a factor of Agility. :-?

He has a 1 in 6 chance of dying right away if Incapacitated, so not so much "deathproof" much less ridiculously so.

Barring Legendary Edges, d12 is the highest a character can achieve, so that's their "level."

The issue here is that both the fighter and priest aren't really defined by their Traits, but their Edges. The above seems to be based on the idea that characters can be strongly defined by those Traits when the system doesn't really work that way at all, and thinking that way would just lead to further misunderstanding. For instance, a d12 for a fighter is comparatively unimportant compared to Frenzy, Trademark Weapon, Sweep, First Strike, Two Fisted, etc.

Anyway, may not be the presumption, but hopefully that helps.

Interesting, I hadn't really looked at Savage Worlds in the light of Edges being the power drive.

In other games you really tend to focus on the skill die itself while things like "feats" are minor fluff and flavor.

Yeah it takes a while to get used to the fact that generally you're better off with an Edge than with upping a skill (though you do need to do some of that, it's just the majority of the time you're going to take an edge.

Edges are not the same as Feats in other systems, they do a lot more than that, almost more akin to non-magic powers.

I've had to mention the same thing to new players in my group; unlike games where a 20 Strength is clearly "stronger" than a 15, Savage is a bit different. I tell my players to remember that no matter what "die" you are rated, it can always be a "1" this time.

On this idea, I've wondered:

How "dumb" is a d4 Smarts?

I have a d4 SMA character and I tend to play him as less just simple minded. Not Hulk Speak simple, but always practical and always thinks of the straightforward and least complex way to do things.

I wonder the same about the other stats too, but Smarts is the one I'm most worried about.

Hrm, "Smarts is a measure of how well your character knows his world and culture, how well he thinks on his feet, and mental agility."

So I don't think d4 Smarts is necessarily stupid, just a bit ignorant and slow-witted. You could give him Clueless, Illiterate and Poverty as well though.

I've used d4 smarts for a person who wasn't very worldly. Hadn't been out much, not much contact with people / the outside world

then raised later.

Or I could see it as someone who just thinks slow, not so good with academics, etc. That PC I might not raise it as soon / at all

I've always looked at it like D6 was the baseline "average", with D4 being below average. Everything else went from "above average" to "Damn he's good!!!'

Some time back, SlasherEpoch answered this by saying that a d4 in Smarts is as dumb as is dramatically or comedically appropriate.

That seems to be the secondary unsaid mantra of Savage Worlds.
