A blog with house rules and settings

#1 Postby Sky Marshall » Tue Apr 04, 2017 4:13 pm

Hi,

I am new to this forum and glad to share with you my settings and ideas about Savage Worlds, which is MY rpg system to play with.

By the way, if I make some mistakes in English, it is because I am French, so I beg your pardon.

I discovered Savage Worlds four years ago and always have played with it since then. It is an amazing toolbox, and thanks to it I made, and am still making, settings and house rules.

There are more settings in French, but everything new is now translated, and here is the interestings content in English I want to share with you:

- Dead Space, the setting inspired by the video games, with a scenario and the character sheet.
- A house rule to put a black hole into your science-fiction game in my Interstellar article.
- Milo and Radovan from the trilogy Pusher as NPC in my article about the Pusher trilogy.
- Handle cannibalism in your game with a rule inspired by the movie The Neon Demon.
- If you want some rules to use differently the wild die, or handle the initiative with a D20, you can read my article about the dice.

You will find all this on my website, the address is in my signature, in these categories: RPG, and Reviews.

I will keep uptaded this post with the new contents to come.
Don't hesitate to tell me what worked or didn't work for you

Hey there, Sky Marshall! Welcome aboard!

To tell you the truth, we have had more problems with English speakers destroying English than we've ever had with you lads (and lasses!) across the pond!

Looking forward to checking out your Blog.

I am looking at your Dead Space material right now, and I see a lot of pictures taken straight out of the game, and with how you have a donation function on your site could that mean some trouble if this ever got big.

Thanks you about my English Snate56 ;)

Duck-of-Doom, I have not thought of the images as a problem, but it could be. I asked Pinnacle about the donation button and Jodi answered me that until everything was free there was no problem to use the SW rules.

The donation is about the time spent to adapt Dead Space (or others, I am working on a new one), or to create house rules.

I will explain that on the blog, that the donation function is only about time spent and not the images which are not mine.
Thank you

Clint has said that even optional donations violate the fan license:

Clint wrote:
ogbendog wrote:Rpgnow has a Pay What You Want option for a price, so the item is free unless you want to pay for it.

On the licensing page, under the Fan license, it says:

8 ) This licensee agrees not to charge for the product in any way, shape, or form

Would it be permitted for a a Fan license product to be Pay What You Want?

On the one hand, a person could make it free on a website or etc, then ask for donations by PayPal. The Pay What You Want simply makes that easier to do.

EDIT: although now that I think about it, asking for donation might violate the spirit of rule 8.

Nope, it would be an actual violation of that rule. Section 8 clearly states not charging "in any way, shape, or form," and Pay What You Want is a way of charging, even if voluntary.

It has to be free, completely and utterly, to qualify under the Fan License. Anything else requires being an approved licensee, including Pay What You Want.

Only might violate the spirit of rule 8. This is why I sent an email to Pinnacle, after reading all these rules, to have their authorization.

I don't charge for the content I made. But someone can give me something for the time spent on my blog, which is not only about Savage Worlds and Dead Space, and for a part has also French content not yet translated.

Everything is free, donation is only an option. So I don't charge.
And for now, I must have had a thousand visitors on my Dead Space article and 0$ donation, so if I wanted to charge, I would have found a better way :D

The text you're quoting is from a poster's question. The important part is Clint's answer, which states that "it would be an actual violation of that rule". Not "might", but "actual".

I obviously don't know the contents of your private email exchange, but perhaps Jodi misunderstood your question, or maybe you misinterpreted her reply? Clint's official answer on the subject was very clear, and I have turned down several offers of donations as a result.

Anyway, sorry to take this thread off-topic. I'll post a question in the "Hey Pinnacle!" forum and hopefully find out what the situation is. EDIT: The question is here

I have sent you a private message with my exchange with Jodi.
I understood what she wrote, it was also very clear.

It is not a Pay what you want, it is a donation button about the entire blog, which is really different.

If you want to play a "The Ninth Gate" game, I explain in this article why I like the "Codex Infernus" for Savage Worlds, and give you the rules for Boris Balkan and Dean Corso :)

Nice work on the Savage Worlds Dead Space ... I've never tried the game but I loved the movie. I'm about to start a Pirates of the Spanish Main campaign with my group, otherwise, I'd give that a try. By the way, I might steal your title "Chests and Quests" for an episode of my Pirates ... it's just perfect for the milieu . . . ;-)
